Robert Rubio's Los Angeles Penthouse

Robert Rubio had his pick of of fabulous, high profile Interior Designers to choose from since he owns one of the most chic vintage furniture stores in Los Angeles. We have shopped at Robert’s store, Casa Victoria, for many years. We have purchased items at this store for every project we have ever worked on.

Robert owns a beautiful home in Los Angeles’s historic Leimert Park area. Leimert Park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Central Park NYC fame. Robert fell in love with his neighborhood and is an active member of the neighborhood association. A few years ago, Robert was helping a friend find an apartment in the area when they were shown a grand art deco apartment that Robert decided he had to have for himself.The place needed a lot of work and produced many challenges considering it was a rental. As with most rental apartments, there were many layers of wallpaper and paint which had been carelessly applied. The budget did not allow for paint stripping, so we sanded and painted over what was there.Sometimes it is best to not expect perfection in older rentals and to embrace the character of some of it’s wear and tear. As photographer Burt Stern said, ” A woman is made more beautiful by her scars.” If this apartment were a woman, she would definitely have a past. The building was rumored to have been commissioned by Bugsy Siegel for his mistress to live in this apartment. Leimert Park is an African American music and cultural center for Los Angeles, and Robert wanted to celebrate some of this rich, local color. Our custom paint designs for the living room were inspired by Art deco patterns and African textiles. This created a style we like to call Afro-Deco. Robert tells us that his Leimert Park Avenue penthouse is the most beloved home he has ever lived in, and we were honored to help him create it.
